1. Narrow your focus Your memoir should be written as if the entire book is a snapshot of one theme of your life. Or consider it a pie, where your life represents the whole pie, and you are writing a book about a teeny-tiny sliver. Your memoir is not an autobiography. Recently I discovered your blog and book The Memoir Project. It is as though every post was written for me– very helpful and inspiring. Today, this post really spoke to me. The timing is good in my place of re-writing (yet again) my memoir. Each time I revisit the draft, I realize how much work I need to do until it is ready for the public. Using the feedback you gather from whichever source you employ will allow you to make sure that your memoir is a book which speaks to readers. When someone reads a book that helps them make sense of their own experience they tell their friends about it. It’s that kind of word of mouth that helps your book find an audience. The memoir market is so glutted your story has to be unique, new and fresh. 2) Don't die. Staying alive is one of the most important things a memoir writer can do. 3) Don't lie. You can change names. You can change physical characteristics of people if it doesn't alter the story. But you can't make stuff up. 4) A memoir is a book of memories.
